Campaign Story

About the project

Children in Annamayya district, Andhra Pradesh, often drop out of school and start working due to inadequate preschool education infrastructure. While boys are mostly engaged in labor, girls are pushed towards early marriage, posing a significant risk to their health and future. There is a significant number of dropouts in both primary and secondary schools.

Making a difference

CRY America’s Project PORD works towards improving children’s retention in education by monitoring Anganwadi Centres (AWCs), forming Children’s Collectives, and reintegrating school dropouts. The project also strengthens child protection mechanisms by working closely with village-level protection committees to reduce instances of child labor and child marriage.

The way forward

● Transform 6 Anganwadi Centres into Model Anganwadis.

● Mainstream 60 dropout children (aged 6–18 years) into schools.

● Monitor 48 Anganwadi Centres (AWCs) and conduct Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) training for 45 AWCs.

● Strengthen 5 School Management Committees by sensitising them about their roles and responsibilities.

● Ensure the transition of 449 children from Grade 10 to Grade 11 and 287 children from Grade 12 to higher education.

● Remove 30 child laborers from work and mainstream them into formal education.

● Stop or avert 25 child marriages through coordinated efforts with stakeholders.

● Strengthen 5 ward-level Child Protection Committees to reduce instances of child labor and child marriage.

● Conduct 2 child labor rescue operations with support from the labor Department.

● Sustain 41 Children’s Collectives and implement Year 1 and Year 2 life skills modules in 56 villages and 11 hostels.

● Implement the Parents’ Module covering 300 parents from urban slums.

2022 Plan Highlights

● Mainstream child labor into schools.
● Enrolling 450 children in children’s collectives.
● Preparing 10 Anganwadi teachers in their school readiness program.

2021 Grant Disbursed = $39,586

Piyu’s return to education

Piyu*, a 13-year-old girl was diagnosed with polio at the age of five. As she grew older and began attending school, regular attendance became increasingly difficult due to her health challenges. Alongside this, she faced constant discrimination, which made her school environment even more isolating. Over time, the emotional and physical strain became too much to bear, and she dropped out in Grade 9, moving to her grandparents’ home.

When the CRY America project team learned about her situation, they visited her with Anganwadi teachers and village secretariat volunteers. With patience and empathy, they spent time counselling Piyu and her family, helping them understand the importance of continuing her education, the rights of children with disabilities, and the support systems available to them.

Through consistent follow-ups, her grandparents slowly began to reconsider their decision on the condition that Piyu would be in a safe and supportive environment. The team then introduced them to a special child care centre that provides inclusive education, physiotherapy, and developmental support for children with disabilities. They facilitated her enrolment, ensuring she could learn in a space where she felt secure and valued. To ease her access to education, the centre also provides an annual travel allowance of INR 6,000.

Today, Piyu attends the centre three days a week. Surrounded by supportive peers, she is preparing for her Grade 10 board exams, and confidently building a future she can call her own.
